Commissioner's Business Recognition Award

For the 29 years, the Commissioner's Business Recognition Award (commonly known as CBRA) celebrated the commitment, creativity, and innovation of partnerships between Florida businesses, organizations, and public schools.
Each year schools select their most outstanding Volusia Partner to become their Business Partner of the Year.  This year we had 25 Business Partners of the Year.  You can view the list under “Awards>Volusia Partners of the Year.”  A district selection committee chose an exemplary partner to receive the Commissioner’s Business Recognition Award.  This year’s recipient is Food Brings Hope nominated by Southwestern Middle School.

Food Brings Hope has been named Volusia         County Schools' Business Partner of the
Year and recipient of the Department of
   Education's Commissioner's Business
   Recognition Award (CBRA).  The award
was presented to Food Brings Hope during
the Florida Chamber Foundation 2016 Learners to Earners Education Summit in June.
Food Brings Hope was founded in 2007 and has partnered with Southwestern Middle School for two years.  This business partner now touches the lives of 800 students at 15 schools sites providing nourishing meals, enhanced academics, rewards for improvement, and opportunities to participate in sporting and cultural events.
The bedrock of the school-business partnership with Food Brings Hope is a focus on student achievement for Teen Zone students in all core subjects in grades 6-8.  Food Brings Hope's goal is to move every student to a higher level by setting high expectations and engaging in meaningful actvities to promote academic success.  Food Brings Hope provides hot meals during weekly meetings and fully funds transportation costs to events.
Southwestern Middle School data indicates 6th grade Teen Zone students have maintained the highest overall GPA, attendance, and improvement in student behavior.  Food Brings Hope not only enriches the lives of the students, but also provides them with a sense of success and hope.
