The 2018-19 school year promises to be different from any other school year in the history of Volusia County Schools.  With the passage of the Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School Public Safety Act, we will see armed guards or law enforcement officers on every school campus, including elementary schools.  This new law not only addresses extra security for all schools; it also establishes an additional layer of mental health care resources and assistance for our students.

These security measures are in addition to steps that Volusia County Schools began last year, including installing interior fencing to give all schools a single-point entry, threat assessments to determine what additional security measures should be installed, and training for our staff for various emergencies and threats.  That training will continue this school year to include students by utilizing age appropriate, research-based programs and practices.

The safety and security of our students and school campuses has always been a top priority, and the security measures that are now in place will provide a greater level of comfort for our families and staff members.  Meeting those safety needs will allow us to have a laser-focus on instruction and personalized learning that is designed to reach students at their individual levels, and then challenge them to achieve at their highest levels.

Last year, our district received a “B” grade from the state of Florida and we are committed to increasing that grade to an “A.”  Our teachers and administrators are dedicated to insuring our students achieve the best education possible.  Everyone is working together to create pathways to opportunities and success for our students, which is perfectly summed up in our theme for the 2018-19 school year.  We’re “All In!"

Cordially,

Tom Russell
