    Woodward Avenue Elementary Mission Statement

    We believe each child is special.  We guide our students to love learning, cooperate with each other, and respect themselves and others.

    History

    Woodward Avenue Elementary opened on October 6, 1966 with 232 students in eight classrooms with 13 staff members.  Classes actually began at Dempsie Brewster Elementary and the nearby First Methodist Church because of construction delays.  Units were added to the original structure in both 1969 and 1973.  Over the years, Woodward has won numerous awards such as the Golden Apple, Meritorious School, School of Distinction, Red Carpet School, and Outstanding Staff Development.  Today Woodward houses 850 students in 52 classrooms with 73 staff members.  Woodward Avenue serves as a center for the gifted and severely emotionally disabled.

    Woodward Avenue is a Professional Development School.

    The collaborative professional development partnership between Woodward Avenue Elementary and Stetson University is dedicated to supporting a diverse community of learners at all levels of educational development. Through mutual trust, respect, and shared decision making, emphasis will be placed on professional growth, effective instructional practice and mentoring.
    Our school based focus areas are:

    • Closing the gap for student achievement;
    • Enriching instruction with hands-on activities;
    • Improving performance of the lowest achieving students, especially in reading;
    • Providing professional activities for teachers;
    • Drawing on community resources to support students and families;
    Woodward's PDS Steering Committee consists of teachers representing each instructional area of our school.
