    Art Education

We are looking forward to another wonderful year of creation!  The focus of the year will be to make individual choices to create unique art that is every individual's personal best.  The year will start with Square 1 Art, our PTA fundraiser.  (Each child will create a masterpiece in Art class, and in mid-November you will receive your child's artwork on stickers along with information about ordering products that feature your child's work.  Orders will be delivered in December - just in time for the holidays.)

Hopefully when things start returning to a (newish) normal, art will again be displayed at Moe's and the Gould Agency in DeLand and at periodic art shows.

Creation is happening in our beautiful room that is in the brand-new music and art suite. The space is awesome and includes a kiln room, a wall of sinks, lots of natural light, and plenty of storage.

We enjoy learning, working, growing, and creating in Art class!

    Music Education

Students enrolled at George Marks Elementary will find themselves immersed in a complete music education.  Moving, singing, and playing are all incorporated throughout the K-5 curriculum.  Basic skills such as reading music are covered as well as instruction in recorders and Orff instruments.  Primary students in grades K-2 will present programs throughout the year, while grades 3-5 are welcome to join our after-school music ensemble.  There are also opportunities for students to audition for All-State Chorus or be selected for the Volusia County Elementary Music Showcase.  And don't forget the annual Spring Musical!  There's always music being made at George Marks Elementary.

    Physical Education

Welcome to George Marks Elementary Physical Education!! Our program is designed to teach students not only about sports, but development of motor skills, nutrition, sportsmanship, and ultimately how to live an active, healthy lifestyle.

Your K-2 student will be engaged in a variety of activities that include locomotor development like skipping, galloping and hopping. Catching and throwing various objects of different size, balancing and transfer of weight, dodging and fleeing, as well as dribbling and striking objects.

Your 3-5 student will be engaged in a variety of activities that include dribbling, hurdling and jumping rope. They will learn how to strike stationary and moving objects with a body part or an implement such as in kickball, soccer, volleyball, 4-square and pickleball. In addition, they will gain skills in throwing to a stationary or moving target as seen in softball, lacrosse and flag football.  Game strategy and tactics will be taught to increase your students game IQ for advanced play.

Above all, George Marks Elementary students will focus on learning how to participate regularly and safely, while exhibiting responsible personal and social behaviors. Because here at George Marks Elementary, we are in the business of building wonderful humans.

    STEAM Education

STEAM Education combines the disciplines of Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math to encourage creativity, critical thinking, collaboration, and communication. Throughout the year, we will learn the Engineering Design Process to grow in our ability to solve real world problems.

For example, primary students were given the challenge to make a wind powered car, and for Hispanic Heritage month, intermediate students created structures inspired by landmarks from various Latin American countries recently

Students will also be introduced to the multitude of careers that use STEAM skills in the hopes of encouraging goals and dreams.

Feel free to contact Ms. Kelly Long @ kslong@volusia.k12.fl.us anytime to learn more.

We are always in need of building supplies for our STEAM challenges. Please see the STEAM Wish List if you would like to help!
