We are busy in February at Forest Lake with many interesting and important activities! February is Black History Month, when we learn about and honor the many contributions made by African Americans throughout history. We conduct our annual parent, student, and staff Climate Survey during February. Many classes plan special activities for Valentine's Day. February is also Heart Health Month. Many Forest Lake faculty and staff members are renewing their New Year's resolutions for a healthy heart in response to Superintendent Russell's challenge to walk 10,000 steps at least 3x per week, or exercise the equivalent of 3 hours per week. I encourage you to join us and make a fitness resolution for your family during February! On February 24th, Forest Lake will hold our annual Jump Rope for Heart, celebrating heart health and raising funds to support the American Heart Association. February is also the official start of testing season. Our 4th and 5th grade students will take the FSA Writing assessment on February 28th.
With so much happening, it is important for you to stay connected with us at Forest Lake. One easy way is through the new (and FREE) VCS App, which allows you to 'follow' Forest Lake on your smart phone or tablet. The VCS App is an all in one portal where you can check the school calendar, receive notifications, monitor grades, view the school lunch menus, and so much more! Simply go to your App Store and search for 'Volusia County Schools'. It's easy and FREE!
We need your input! Our annual Climate Survey is open now through February 28th. This anonymous, web-based survey provides us with valuable information as we develop our school improvement plans. You can access the survey through the following link:
Thank you for sharing your thoughts with us!
This Saturday, February 11th is Parent University at DeLand High School from 8:00 – 11:30. Childcare is provided. You can learn about many topics in sessions led by experts from around the district. To register, go to: www.all4schools.org/Volusia
Beginning this month, students will begin taking very important assessments. As we head into testing season, our teachers are focused on helping students achieve at their highest levels. Please help our 3rd – 5th grade students be ready for the FSA by ensuring they attend every day, complete all assignments, read daily, maintain regular bedtimes and wake-up times, and eat a healthy diet. Encourage your student with positive messages that they will do a great job on the tests if they do their best.
Plans are now being made to update the landscaping around our campus. Several improvements have already been completed (new benches in the parent loop, clearing the fence line along Doyle Road, etc.) but much more is on the way! Several teachers and their classes will join us by 'adopting' an area of campus to plan flowers, shrubs, or gardens. I am working to organize a day for families, staff and the community to come out and 'spruce up' our campus. My target is 'Earth Day', which is Saturday, April 22nd. I'm looking for community partners who would be willing to donate plants, mulch, or funds to help make this a reality. If you would like to participate, please let me know!
