During the school year, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Reading Counts program. Reading Counts is an individual, independent reading incentive program designed to promote student reading. Children select books from the media center, public library, or their home library. After reading the book, they take a computerized comprehension tests in the classroom or the media center in order to earn points. These points enable children to both track their reading progress and to receive positive recognition for their efforts. There are now over 40,000 Reading Counts tests available to students in Volusia County Schools.

At Coronado Beach Elementary School, our goal is to create a love of reading for all our students and to assist them in becoming life long learners. Research in reading shows that by reading as little as 30 minutes per day outside of school, a student can increase reading skills by one year, resulting in success in reading throughout their lives. It is important that you read with your child each and every night.
Your child will come to the Media Center at least once a week during the school year to check out books, participate in story time, and to learn information skills. The Coronado News Network provides a creative opportunity to learn about video production. Our computer lab provides students with the opportunity to learn skills that will help them to conduct child safe internet research.
In addition to the media classes, students will be encouraged to participate in many reading programs and activities. Look for information about other media events in fliers and newsletters that your child brings home throughout the school year.
We look forward to a great year of reading with your child!
