    Learning Highlights 

    Reading: Students will be reading complex grade-level textx to practice various reading skills through the school year.                     
     
    Writing: Writing to explain (expository) and writing to text with direct writing instructionfrom a writing coach daily.
     
    Math: Students will be preparing for addition/subtractionof fractions, the decimal place value system and geometric skills.
     
    Science:  Students will focus on the Nature of science, Earth Science, Physical Science and Life Science.
     
    Social Studies: Students will be covering American History and Geography. 

    Reminders/Notes

    • Students should read 30 minutes and record a brief summary nightly.
    • Parents should sign planners daily.
    • Our Reading Counts progress is monitored weekly. READ READ READ
    • Please study and memorize your multiplication facts! We use them daily!
     

    Communication 

    We believe that communication is a key to your student's success. We will work to schedule a conference with each family early in the year. However, please inform us of any concern or request a conference at any time to review your child's progress. Classroom teacher/parent communication will be via the student planner.

    Homework 

    Homework will be assigned Monday through Thursday.  Time is given for students to write their daily assignments in their planners. Please check your child's homework and sign the planners.  

    Assessments 

    Reading tests are given every weekly; other subject area tests will be announced in advance (and written in the planner) to allow students time to properly prepare.  

     

     
     

    Fun Friday 

    Students earn many different rewards including Fun Friday activities and treats.  

    Field Trips 

    PTA will sponsor several fundraisers to cut down the student cost. Your support will be appreciated! The date of the trips will be announced as soon as they are booked.  

    Special Events 

    Fifth grade students will participate in the Blue Lake Science Fair with winners continuing at the district-level exposition in the spring. This is a non-competitive event that celebrates the success of all student winners from schools all over the district. An informational meeting will be held to provide information regarding the project guidelines.  

    Birthdays 

    On the last Friday of each month, we will recognize the children’s birthdays for the month.  Parents may send in a small bagged treat that can be shared with the child’s classmates.
