connectPD is the VCS professional learning online network/community. Online learning, or e-learning, offers a number of advantages for educators seeking professional growth and is a valuable resource made available within our district. Access to online learning is available through MyPGS and may be delivered through a variety of platforms. The district may purchase online courses from outside vendors that offer up-to-date content on a variety of topics relevant to educators and administrators. Courses may be created by VCS content specialists and delivered through Moodle, an online learning platform within the My PGS System. VCS-created courses will take one of two formats: “blended” or online-only. A blended course uses a combination of face-to-face instruction and online activities to support learning. For example, Moodle may be used to provide a venue for face-to-face participants to receive support and continue learning through collaboration and sharing best practices. The online-only courses will be presented in one of two ways. Similar to the blended courses, some online-only courses will have a predetermined start and end date, scheduled weekly activities and include collaborative, collegial discussions. Other online courses will be self-paced, allowing participants to complete the learning within a set period of time. All online courses will have a facilitator assigned who will oversee the course, be available to support participants, and determine successful completion.

What is Moodle? Moodle is an open source Course Management System that universities, community colleges, K-12 schools, business and individual instructors use to deliver online courses and to supplement face-to-face courses.

The Professional Development Alternatives (PDA) modules are designed to assist educators in becoming more proficient in responding to the various instructional and behavioral needs of each individual learner in order to maximize achievement of all students.

Many of these modules will support the new recertification requirement for instruction in teaching students with disabilities. However, each school district is responsible to ascertain if the content of a module satisfies the content requirement for students with disabilities (SWD) credit. Please note: individuals not currently employed by a Florida school district or organization with an approved MIP must verify PRIOR TO REGISTERING that their local school district or organization is willing to award in-service credits for non-employees.

The facilitated modules provide ongoing collaboration with colleagues and expert facilitators. The independent study modules allow self-paced learning.

The PDA online modules began in 2003, with a partnership between the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services and the Bureau of Educator Certification. The modules continue to be funded by the Florida Department of Education, Bureau of Exceptional Education and Student Services and are coordinated by the Florida Diagnostic and Learning Resources System (FDLRS) Administration Project and the nineteen FDLRS associate centers, in collaboration with the Florida Center for Interactive Media at Florida State University.
