Volusia PLCs in Action

What is a PLC (Professional Learning Community)?

"An ongoing process in which educators work collaboratively in recurring cycles of collective inquiry and action research to achieve better results for the students they serve. Professional learning communities operate under the assumption that the key to improved learning for students is continuous job-embedded learning for educators." - definition from Learning by Doing, Second Edition. However, due to the growing popularity of the term professional learning community, it has been used so ambiguously to describe virtually any groups of educators who share a common interest that the process is in danger of losing its meaning and effectiveness.

The History of PLCs in Volusia

During the past ten years, many schools have investigated and implemented PLCs to varying degrees of fidelity and success. Learning Forward, the national organization for professional learning, and the Florida Department of Education Professional Development System Evaluation recognizes the significance of PLCs on educator professional learning and student achievement. In 2012-2013, VCS initiated a review of PLCs in its schools for the purpose of ensuring implementation fidelity.
