Page ContentVolusia County Schools 2012 United Way Campaign In 1887, a Denver woman, a priest, two ministers and a rabbi recognized the need for cooperative action to address their city's problems. They created an organization to serve as an agent to collect funds for local charities, as well as to coordinate relief services, counsel and refer clients to cooperating agencies, and make emergency assistance grants in cases which could not be referred. More than 125 years later, United Way is still focused on mobilizing the caring power of communities and making a difference in people's lives. Each year the employees of Volusia County Schools come together in support of the United Way of Volusia-Flagler Counties. Our local United Way has been servicing our children, co-workers, neighbors and communities since 1941. Working with 60 programs and 43 partner agencies, the United Way provides funding to serve more than 1 out of 3 residents in our community, with services such as, emergency food, shelter, financial assistance, counseling, and crisis response. For a complete list of United Way services, programs and charities, visit www.unitedway-vfc.org. Dr. Margaret Smith, Volusia County Schools Superintendent, has issued a challenge for each employee to contribute in an effort to reach our fundraising goal of $130,000.00.
