Volusia Schools Kick-Off United for Puerto Rico Relief Effort

9/29/2017

Every Volusia County School student, parent and staff member who has the resources is being asked to contribute $1 toward the school district's United for Puerto Rico Relief Effort.  Donations will be accepted Monday, October 2, through Friday, October 13, and will then be presented on behalf of the entire school district to the United for Puerto Rico organization, which was created by the governor's wife, Beatriz Rosselló, in collaboration with the private sector.

Volusia hopes to rally its 63,000 students and nearly 7,500 employees to collect more than $70,000 to help aid and support those in Puerto Rico who have been devastated by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria.  Schools are being asked to share what they are doing on Twitter using #VCStogetherwecan.

Many in Volusia County are still reeling from Hurricane Irma, and our schools are working to support families in need.  Throughout our school district, we also have many students and employees who have friends and family in Puerto Rico.  Volusia County Schools has a history of providing aid when others are affected by natural disasters, including Hurricane Katrina, the tsunami in Indonesia and the earthquake in Haiti.  Just days before Hurricane Irma hit Florida, Volusia County Schools was gearing up to raise funds that would support people in Texas and Louisiana who were impacted by Hurricane Harvey.  Although the effort was cut short as we faced an enormous storm barreling our way, $700 was raised and will be presented to the American Red Cross on behalf of the entire district.

During the hurricanes of 2004, the School District of Volusia County received assistance in its recovery, including support from volunteer workers, supplies for students and aid from outreach programs.  In 2005, the district organized the Tsunami Relief Effort and Hurricane Katrina Relief Effort as ways for the school district community to give back to others in need.  Over $59,500 was collected and presented to UNICEF (United Nation Children's Fund) for the victims in Southeast Asia and $117,000 was collected, matched by an anonymous donor, and presented to the American Red Cross for the victims in New Orleans.  In 2010, once again Volusia rallied to assist those affected by the earthquake in Haiti.  Nearly $39,000 was collected for the Haiti Earthquake Relief Effort, which was presented to the American Red Cross.
