Volusia County Schools Celebrates Construction of New Pierson Elementary School

5/25/2017

At 9 a.m. on Thursday, June 1, Volusia County Schools will officially celebrate the construction start of the long-awaited Pierson Elementary replacement school.  The groundbreaking ceremony will be held at the site of the new school, 657 Center Street, Pierson.

The design of the new school sets the standard for a 21st century facility incorporating higher level learning concepts, and included input from students, parents, faculty and staff and the community.  As a nod to the fern industry in Seville and Pierson, the school will incorporate architectural elements on the school's front exterior representing ferns.  The reception area will display a 1988 art sculpture, Ferns & Family, created by then Pierson art teacher, Tom Allocco, which is currently on display at the existing school.

The new Pierson Elementary School will open for students in August 2018 and will continue to serve the same student population under the leadership of current principal, Kimberly Hutcherson.

Sitting on 24 acres one-mile north of the current Pierson Elementary and Taylor Middle-High schools, the new school will be the first to be built with funds from the ½-cent sales tax extension.  When complete, the school will have two buildings, including 35 classrooms, a cafetorium, art and music rooms, an outdoor stage and physical education pavilion, and a media center that can be utilized by parents and the community.
